What) The Captains' Return is a twice life sized statue of Lewis, his dog Seaman and Clark that was built to honor the 200th anniversary of their return to St. Louis. The statue weighs more than three-and-a-half tons and stands about 23 feet high from the stainless steel base to the top of Clark's hat. It was dedicated on September 23rd, 2006 and it stands in the shadow of the Gateway Arch on St. Louis' Riverfront. (1)
Why) Given
my fondness for Lewis
and Clark, imagine how
pleasantly surprised I was to see a large statue of two men in
a boat on the St. Louis riverfront. I suspected that it
could only be a statue of Lewis and Clark but I had
to walk up to be sure. Pam was pleased that Seaman was
featured so prominently especially because the other
literature we have seen does not mention him.
